None so far, except that I'm doing it!  I'm running.

Short-Term Running Goals:

For running to become easier and for me to enjoy running.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Complete a marathon.  I've started training for the Seattle Rock 'n' Roll Marathon on June 25th, 2011!

Personal:

I am an active person who enjoys all kinds of sports but have never been good at running.  I have always found running painful and difficult.  I enjoy playing volleyball, tennis, biking, ultimate frisbee and skiing, to name a few.  I feel great when I get out of the house.  I would love to someday become good at running and actually enjoy it.

This is the beginning of the second week of training.  Today was a short run so I tried to push myself a little.  I therefore ran 11.04 minute miles instead of my usual between 11.30 and 12.00 min/miles.  It was tough though and I didn't really feel like I was enjoying it.  I just wanted it to be over.  I did have some pain in my shins today, not sure why.  I didn't have my music but that's okay because I'm a little tired of my music.  It was a cold day, around 36 F, but it was sunny and not windy.  I actually think I overdressed.

Welcome to the blog. Good luck the aggressive goal of the June Marathon...any particular reason for the rush to run one so quickly after getting into running?

From Kim on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 16:43:07 from 67.199.180.90

Welcome to the blog. I was thinking the same thing as jtshad....I ran my first marathon 1 year after starting running and think that may have even been a little too soon. I ended up injured and out of the running loop for about 7 months. I kind of wish I would have given myself a better base before marathon training. Just my 2 cents. But you are already very active and I wasn't, so you have that on your side! : )

Welcome to the blog!!!

Are you on an 18 weeks training program for your first marathon?

I think it's wonderful that you have a goal to work towards!

I ran my first marathon just 2 weeks before I turned 50. I was not an athlete like you. I didn't know anything about running. I started jogging in Jan. 2005. Began running in April. The following month signed up for the St George Marathon which is the first Sat in Oct. I followed Hal Higdon's book and 18 weeks Novice program,

lost 15 lbs, ran one half marathon in Aug. as a practice race. I finished my first marathon with a time of 4:38. I was hooked! I love the challenge of running 26.2. I have learned to respect the marathon distance. It humbles me like no other sports, yet gives me so much in return!!!

You are much younger and so much more active than me! With proper training, you will finish

your first marathon and find joy in running!!!

Sorry for the long and unsolicited comments! Have a great day!

Hello everyone! Thanks for the comments it makes me feel less alone in this cyber world. Thank you for the support and your questions.

I'm on an 18 week training program that I amended into a 19 week program. I am being very careful about my training. I am listening to my body and backing off when I feel the stress. I am not trying to run too fast and am content at maintaining my slow pace of 12 minute miles. I hope that I'm not being too aggressive but now that I decided to do it, I can't let myself back out. The mind is such a powerful force and I feel that I can't let myself question my commitment to this goal.

Awesome Ana. You'll do just fine.

They say running is 50% physical and 90% mental! :) :) :)

Sounds like you're on the right track! You've got a committed mind...a can-do attitude! Definitely no backing out! Keep up the good work!!! When you cross the finish line on June 25th, you will have the most amazing feeling ever! Enjoy the journey! I am so excited for you! :)

Marathon Training Run 6, (Week 2, Run 2) 4.75 miles

Another cold day, 36F, but today was great.  I felt great.  Actually, my husband and I went out to a running store and bought new shoes.  Then we tried them out on our run which went exceptionally well.  I received some advice on my running form from the person at the store and it was very useful.  I am now trying to lean a little forward and let my feet follow my upper body using gravity.  I'm not sure that I'm doing this right, but it felt great on the run.  I wasn't trying to run faster, but did and was able to maintain it throughout the run.  I had no pains or aches and felt very strong.  The shoes were good also, but mostly I think it was my new form that made the difference.  I was able to run 11 minute miles for 4.75 miles without trying and it was a somewhat hilly run!  Yay.  I love it when I feel this way.

Congrats on a good run. Keep at it. I finished my first ultramarathon six months after starting running. Your profile pic makes me miss the Cascades and Olympics. I grew up in Federal Way.

Welcome to the blog and to a running life. Slow and steady on the training and you will be amazed what you can accomplish over months of time.

Welcome to the Blog...I'm a pretty new member too. You mentioned the new running form, I think it's called the "Pace" method of running. I have been working on that along with my cadence and seemed to increase my speed about 15 sec. per mile with the same effort (measured by heart rate). Keep up the good work. I've been runing a little less than a year and I'm training for a Marathon too...!

I'm starting to come down with something today so overall my body is tired and achy. I

didn't feel too bad on the run. My stomach cramped a couple times so I

had to slow down/walk to let it pass. This happened 3 times. Also my

left foot went numb for most of the run, maybe 1 hour but went away at

the end, maybe because I slowed down. My legs felt very tired at the

end. I felt like I was going very slow. Overall, felt okay.

I am sick, so I took it easy and jogged slowly. I felt good during the

run, but when I stopped I felt pretty bad. At the end I was

lightheaded, stomach hurt, no energy, this all passed in due time.

Was sick still and felt poorly but felt okay on the run. I didn't

stress much and didn't have any pains. My head felt just really full,

heavy and it ached. Not a bad run considering. When I stopped running I felt less dizzy than yesterday.

I have not run today, but this is a light week and I'll make it up tomorrow.  Actually, I've been sick all week.  And I don't mean a few sniffles, I mean sick.  I won't get into it but it hasn't been fun and I think today I may be better.  Maybe it helped that I slept until 1:30PM.  I came down with it a little bit on Friday, but Saturday it hit and got worse until today.  I have not logged it here but I did run on Satruday (7 mi), Tuesday (3mi) and Wednesday (3mi).  Today, I passed on all forms or exercise, which sucks because today was volleyball and that's my favorite.  Oh, well.  I'll go back now and log in the runs from earlier this week.  I hope everyone else is feeling better than I.

Felt about like yesterday, but felt good on the run. I felt a little

stronger than yesterday on the run and felt like I ran at a fast pace a

few times throughout the run. I did feel some pain in my shins when I

ran faster. It rained the entire time but it wasn't too cold, about 45

degrees.  Today I broke 11 minute miles (10:43) YAY.

Great day today, great run too!  The weather was super, partly sunny with temps in the low 50s.  I felt awesome and strong.  I didn't feel like I pushed it and manage to break 11 minute miles for the second day in a row (10:27).  I'm pretty darn happy about that.  I guess as I'm getting over this cold, my body feels stronger and it shows in my runs.  I am feeling about 80% today, so I'm still feeling some pressure in my head and have some drainage from the cold.  But overall, I'm feeling spectacular compared to a few days ago!

I'd like to just take a moment to thank everyone for welcoming me to the blog and for your support in my training.  I feel humbled by you all who seem like real runners.  I can barely eek out a mile under 11 minutes while most of you seem to run well under 8 minute miles.  I appreciate that you are all so kind and don't make too much fun of me...  ; )

I always feel a little out of place here, but I use the blog anyway because my husband is one of those that's pretty fast, and he uses it.

Welcome from another 11min miler.
